Do Numbers Count ?
One of the challenges that faces maths teachers is communicating the relevance of the subject to young people. Intelligent Counting was able to bring the subject to life for over a 100 maths-minded youngsters at Plymstock School in Devon with presentations from Diana Perry and Colin Jones.

They were invited by Andrea Perry, the School’s Deputy Head and in charge of the curriculum – and yes, she is Diana’s sister! “It’s difficult to keep young people interested in maths – as an A level subject it’s considered to be hard to pass. One of the most crucial things is that they see that maths is also important in the commercial world and it’s not something you just do to pass exams. They can lose sight of the beauty of the subject when they are focussed on exam results.

“Colin and Diana brought to life for them how maths is used in the real world and in the workplace and that learning to interpret data is important in its own right.”
Colin and Diana made six one-hour presentations to the more able mathematicians in the school, which has 70 students studying maths at A level. Students were shown how numbers are important for analysing the data which iC’s sensors collect and how this applies in business. Three students took on the challenge of a real-life business problem and were sent feedback on their solutions.

Feedback from the students included “It’s interesting to think that so many well-known businesses use numbers” and “It’s nice to see numbers being used in the real world.”

The day has had beneficial results for the school, with Andrea reporting that recruitment to maths and further maths A levels has significantly increased after iC’s visit.

" It was a lively and stimulating day for us too," said Diana.

" Industry always needs more bright minds and if this has helped to steer students towards studying maths, it has been more than worthwhile."
