The Long Distance Engineer
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Engineer
Or how not to get arrested at customs with a suspicious tool bag
In the last six years, one of Intelligent Counting’s intrepid lead engineers, Dave Buckett, has fitted customer counting systems in 26 countries and taken around 425 flights. Wouldn’t we all like to have his frequent flyer points?
Jetting in and out to install the

counting system is no holiday – in fact, New York is the only destination where Dave can recall taking time out. Normally he heads straight to the mall from the airport and spends his day wrestling with cables and, sometimes, the local language, before a night in the hotel and back to the UK. Dave recalls the culture shock of having spent all day installing the system in a store in Mexico City and then walking outside and seeing gun-toting security guards everywhere. Not what he finds usually in Surrey!
Although not part of his original job description, Dave has become adept at sign language – essential for places like Shanghai and the less cosmopolitan Russian cities. Miming that he needs a step ladder is one of the most common manoeuvres in his repertoire.
Dave is now a master at making sure his tools all fit into one bag and that one tool can do many jobs. It still took some time to explain to the non-English speaking customs officials at St Petersburg what all the equipment was for. Unfortunately, customs dogs also seem to take a liking to our plucky engineer – or maybe they just think he looks suspicious!
Luckily Dave is so accomplished at his job that the vast majority of the installations go smoothly so there is no need for a second visit. His other great skill is the ability to fall asleep as soon as he has buckled his seat belt on the plane – so no jet lag for Dave then!
